Electronic prescriptions for controlled substances (EPCS) are seen as one means to create efficiencies in the healthcare setting while addressing key concerns over prescription errors and abuse of prescription painkillers. As a result, states are beginning to mandate EPCS, and healthcare organizations are beginning to implement solutions to enable electronic prescribing. EPCS has been legalized in the United States by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and individual and institutional practitioners can prescribe controlled substances electronically only if they meet certain DEA requirements.
